Abstract

We review the techniques used to detect photons in particle physics experiments. In particular, we describe the principles of operation, the current state of development, and progress made with vacuum photodetectors, semiconductor and hybrid sensors, and gaseous photon detectors. We also discuss applications in ongoing and planned future experiments.
