Abstract

Following a cursory review of early childhood influences, I discuss growing up during World War II and the subsequent experiences that led me to sociology and criminology. Early encounters with ideas, realities, and people—far too many to acknowledge properly—are noted briefly. I close with observations concerning a few issues of special significance and my experiences with them.
