Pricing and Expenditure Transparency

Nonprofit publisher Annual Reviews is committed to transparency in pricing and expenditure.

Our prices are available online in this catalog and are set with the intention of generating a small annual surplus to cover any increased costs.

Below we provide a breakdown of annual expenditure. The generation of this information was guided by the Plan S "Price and Service Transparency Frameworks" – Annual Reviews contributed to the development of the framework – and the "Breakdown of Publication Services and Fees" document developed by the Fair Open Access Alliance. Categorization reflects the fact that the cost structure for review publishing differs from the publishing of primary research articles. For example, all Annual Reviews content is commissioned, so while the total number of articles and the expenditure on peer review is relatively low, the costs of commissioning are high. Editing and illustration costs per article are high, reflecting our strong commitment to quality.
