The Annual Review of Physiology: Past and Present

When Isidore Edelman invited us to write an introductory chapter for this volume of the Annual Review of Physiology, we were delighted with the opportunity to give some of our thoughts and reminiscences about the Review. Our combined span of service as editors covered about 40 years, nearly the entire lifetime of the Review. Each of us had his own experiences and point of view, so rather than attempt a single presentation we have written the following separate sections.
